Welcome to HobermanHoberman Associates is a multidisciplinary practice that specializes in transformable design — the development of products, structures, and environments that change their size and shape. We believe that a world undergoing accelerating change needs an adaptive, interactive approach to design. Whether that means inventing a rapidly deployable shelter, re-defining portability for children's products, or collaborating with architects to develop next-generation adaptive buildings via our Adaptive Building Initiative, our clients seek us out to shape change — and inspire it.
Shaping the Future
For more than twenty years, Hoberman Associates, Inc. (HAI) has pioneered and innovated in the field of transformable design — the development of products, structures, and environments that change their size and shape. HAI was founded in 1990 by designer Chuck Hoberman, whose international career seamlessly fuses art, design, engineering, and architecture.
HAI was founded with the primary aim to design behavior – to create objects that have the living qualities of organisms. Throughout its history HAI has focused on fostering a dynamic relationship between product and user. Our design explorations include kinetic sculptures, deployable architecture, and transformable stage elements.

In the tradition of great twentieth-century engineering, Hoberman understands the beauty in geometrical and mathematical solutions.
The unfolding structures that Hoberman invents are a boiled-down-to-the-essence demonstration of the mathematical principles that govern this biological web of nature. And because nature appeals to people, the symmetries and transformations of Hoberman’s unfolding structures hold the same attraction.
(Hoberman’s work) is in defiance of our expectations… it fools the part of our brains that distinguishes the living from the nonliving…
Hoberman Associates has enabled a magical, transformational structure… It’s as close as you can get to hallucinating without the pharmaceuticals.
Chuck is unique as an artist and a technologist. He is one of the few who have been able to strike that balance successfully.
